Christophe Lambert devait avoir le rôle principal
Avant de caster Jean-Marc Barr pour ce qui allait être le rôle de sa vie, Luc Besson voulait proposer le costume de Jacques Mayol à Christophe Lambert, qu'il venait de diriger dans Subway. Mais ce dernier refusa après avoir attrapé une otite lors de son baptême de plongée. Besson a également rencontré Mickey Rourke et envisagé d'engager Mel Gibson, avant de confier finalement le rôle à l'acteur américain adopté par la France, Jean-Marc Barr.

But the latter refused after catching an ear infection during his first dive. Besson also met with Mickey Rourke and considered hiring Mel Gibson, before ultimately giving the role to French-adopted American actor Jean-Marc Barr.
